Crowded Places and Glass

With the London Olympics looming large and the continuous global unrest, the Government has been getting behind the ‘Crowded Places’ initiative – a scheme designed to encourage those responsible for stadia, event venues and any location where high volumes of people gather, to review their safety plans.

The arbitrary nature of terrorist attacks and the propensity to use explosives has particularly highlighted the risk from architectural glass. In fact, Home Office statistics suggest that up to 90 per cent of injuries in the event of an explosion will result from flying glass.

The Crowded Places guidelines recommend that stadium glass should offer a level of protection to reduce hazards and has highlighted the risk from glazing. The glazing throughout the stadia and accommodation for the 2012 Olympics has been designed to provide blast hazard mitigation protection.

Durable has been working with Counter Terrorism Security Advisers, the police teams responsible for advising property managers on safety. As a result Durable provides a free service of assessing existing glazing, evaluating the risk and if required executing pragmatic remedial programmes using anti-fragmentation window film. This has proven to be a cost-effective, long term solution.
